How I Spent New Year’s Day

Happy New Year.

It’s the first day of 2026.

I didn’t go out for New Year’s Eve last night. I didn’t stay up for the countdown either, because I had to wake up early. I needed to drive my mom and sister to the Buddhist monastery this morning.

After dropping them off, I stopped by the supermarket to pick up some fruit for this coming Saturday. It’s the fifteenth day of the lunar month, and on that day, we usually prepare four kinds of fruit and fresh flowers as offerings to the Buddha.

I bought some South African oranges, apples, and bananas. I almost bought more mandarins for the fourth kind of fruit, but we still had some at home, so I decided not to. In the end, I left the last choice to my mom.

After the Dharma service ended, I drove them home. Later, my mom rode her scooter to the wet market to buy some Asian pears.

Looking back, I kind of regretted not buying the mandarins. If I had, my mom wouldn’t have had to go out again, especially since it was lightly raining.

Anyway, that’s how the first day of 2026 went for me.
