Why I Still Wash My Clothes by Hand

I’ve noticed that these days, most people use washing machines for their laundry, but I still prefer washing clothes by hand. Why?

Here are a few reasons.

First, clothes get cleaner. Some dirty spots or stains can be cleaned much more thoroughly by hand. I usually rub soap directly onto the clothes and gently scrub them with a brush. Also, some materials just aren’t suitable for a washing machine.

Second, it saves a lot of water. Using a washing machine requires filling it with a large amount of water, which can be very wasteful. Water resources in Taiwan are already limited, so this matters to me.

Third, it saves electricity. According to Taiwan’s Bureau of Energy, a washing machine uses about 35.5 kWh of electricity per year just on standby, which costs around NT$90.

Finally, hand-washing clothes is a light workout and good for blood circulation. People sometimes ask me how I stay in shape. Honestly, I don’t really exercise, aside from a little ping shuai gong (a type of qigong). What really helps is doing household chores. I even wash the kitchen floor by hand. Yes, by hand. Housework is my secret way of staying slim.
