I don’t really have any pets these days, but back when I was in elementary school, my family had everything---dogs, parakeets, Java sparrows, all kinds of fish, and even a red-eared slider turtle.
We had a female dog named Lucky. After she had her puppies, we eventually gave them all to our neighbors. We simply didn’t have the time or energy to care for them all. As for the others… it’s a sad story.
We had two parakeets. One was killed by a large rat, and the other died from the shock of it. The Java sparrows were kept in a cage in our backyard, but somehow a stray cat got to them.
The fish didn’t fare much better. We had a large tank, and even though we changed the water regularly and used water conditioners, they all eventually got sick and died. Even the turtle passed away. We kept it in a plastic bucket and didn’t realize it couldn’t stay in water all the time.
It was heartbreaking.
We don’t keep pets anymore. They require a huge amount of time, energy, and money, but more than that, the loss is just too painful. They’re living beings, and I don’t want to go through that grief again.
